A Threat to Your WordPress Blog: Duplicate Content

Article by Oleg Ishenko, SEOResearcher.com

Full version of the article including tutorial can be found here: Making Your WordPress Blog Duplicate Content Safe

Blogging is extremely popular these days. And the most popular stand-alone blog engine is WordPress. It is flexible, has many useful featires and there is a lot of eye-catching templates for it. But those who have a WordPress blog must be aware of a serious problem that can cause your blog to be removed from Google’s search results. The problem is: Duplicate Content.

WordPress content management system which, when used with the default configuration, is not duplicate content proof. In fact this CMS is capable to render almost 100% of your content duplicate. As usual the fault of the system has roots in its advantages. WordPress has many features facilitating blogging and linking, such as RSS feeds to posts and comments, trackback URLs, monthly archives and so on. In the same time this variety of URLs returning similar or identical pages represents a clear case of duplicate content.

WordPress And Duplicate Content

The first evidences of duplicate content produced by your WordPress CMS can be found in your sidebar. They are category pages and monthly/daily archives. Category pages store your articles posted under the same topic — a category. Such pages have no unique content; they are just a collection of your previous posts. Monthly and daily archives also simply group your previous articles by the date of posting. Sometimes when you have only one post in a given day, the archive page for the date and your post are totally identical.

The next case of duplicate content is even more prominent. It can be your home page itself. If it contains not excerpts but the full text of your posts, then it duplicates your post pages. This also applies to the “next/previous entries” pages — those accessible via /page/2, /3, /4 etc.

Feeds. Search engine spiders crawl all the content they can reach and of course this includes RSS feeds too. The additional problem with them is that Google may choose to display your RSS URL in the search results over the link to the original post. In this case the user who clicks this result will see an XML formatted page which is not “human-friendly”.

Trackback URLs. Many WordPress templates add trackback links after posts. This links enable authors to track who links to their posts. Usually, if your post URL looks like “www.yoursite.com/2006-11-30/yourpost/” its trackback URL will be “www.yoursite.com/2006-11-30/yourpost/trackback/”.

Identical meta-description. By default WordPress doesn”t provide a tool to add unique meta description tags to your posts, and they either have none or share a single site-wide description. Having no meta description at all is a disadvantage, as a properly written one can make your snippet stand out in a SERP. Having an identical description for all your pages is a threat, as Google might get them filtered out as too similar.

Because of the duplicate content Google search can return less desired URLs (such as feeds or archives instead of original posts); your pages can be moved out of their index, or placed into the supplemental results, which are rarely displayed to users.

Initially when I created my first blog there were many options. It wasn’t important which blogging application you chose (Blogger, WordPress etc.) because they were, at least in my mind, equal in in their functionality.

Well, I have got to admit that I was not only naive but totally wrong. Today, I have probably ten or more blogs and most of them are on the WordPress platform. The early ones were created in Blogger because Blogger seemed to have a greater presence in the Internet and appeared to be a bigger player.

Once again, I was mistaken. In one simple word, WordPress is, as my kids say, “Awesome”. Let me explain why.

1. It’s Free. If you’ve read anything I’ve written before or have been a member of one of my websites, you know I just love free.

2. It Works. Now free is great but working as promised is even greater. Are there many products you purchased or even received for free, that have really functioned as claimed? Not many I guess….

3. It’s Open Source. By opening the code to all programmers, WordPress has grown by leaps and bounds. Today there are thousands of applications, themes and plug-ins available that would not be around if the code was protected.

4. It’s Easy to Setup and Install – It’s very simple to install a WordPress blog using cPanel. All you need to do is register a domain, or even use an existing domain, start Fantastico and let it do all the work.

5. Simplicity – Once you’ve installed WordPress, the dashboard controls practically every process you need to deal with in order to maximize your blog.

6. Blog or Need I Say Website – WordPress blogs are far more than what blogs were years or even months ago. Today they can be complete websites with all of the functionality previously only available with HTML type programming. It’s even possible to create a membership site including all of the sophisticated features just using a blog. Kind of cool….

7. Did I Say Plug-in? – Now, this is really where the power begins. If you’re not really a WordPress guru, plug-ins are small applications that provide great power to WordPress. With the right plug-in you can do just about anything with your blog such as SEO, chatting, converting text to speech, adding videos, tracking etc. Truly amazing not only in their ability but in their number. Thousands of plug-ins exist today and the majority are free.

Conclusion – If you are currently thinking about either creating a blog or have a need to fabricate a new website, I would sincerely suggest that you take a look at using WordPress. If you are in need of help in getting your blog up and running there are numerous eBook and other material to help you.

What are the Benefits of Using a WordPress Blog?

Article by Steve Duval

WordPress is one of the most popular blog sites on the Internet today. It allows anyone with a valid e-mail address to create his or her own personal or business blog. For a small fee, you can purchase a WordPress account, which provides even more functionality for online marketing. When you sign up with WordPress, you gain access to several different templates and plug-in that allow you to customize your blog so that it fits in with your business website design seamlessly. Blogging can be a powerful way to create interest in your site and generate a higher volume of traffic without spending extra marketing money.

Give Your Business a Personality

When you create a WordPress blog and update it regularly you have an opportunity to give your business some personality and character. An Internet marketing site can be relatively anonymous and faceless for the average web consumer. A blog, on the other hand, is something that gives customers a peek into the daily life of someone involved with your business. The informal design of a blog gives Internet consumers a chance to get to know the people who are behind the business better, which makes it easier for them to trust you and spend money on your site.

Interactive Elements Get Customers Involved

WordPress offers several opportunities for your customers to interact directly with you and your company. They can create conversations by responding to posts that are related to things they are interested in. When you build a blog post you can provide more information than you would normally give on a regular web page. That extra info can contain links to images or product pages that your customers can click to access the materials you are discussing. WordPress also encourages visitors to share posts that they find interesting with other networking sites, which means free advertising for your company.

Multiple Marketing Plug-in

WordPress has some specific marketing plug-ins that can help you convert casual visitors to regular customers. Widgets can allow visitors to request a list of articles that contain similar content so that they can learn more about the products that you promote. WordPress has powerful sharing plug-in that allow you to create customized browsing experiences for visitors based on the networking sites that they are signed up with. Personalized landing pages will recognize the program a customer is using and create content for your blog that works directly with those programs.

Drive Traffic to Your Site

WordPress also gives you plug-in that are designed to optimize your blog’s search engine rankings. You can use plug-in that help you control exactly what search engines find when they index your site, which allows you to target your search terms more carefully. There are SEO site map creators, as well as plug-in that will make sure all of the images and links on your blog are search engine friendly. The higher your blog ranks on search engines, the more likely people will find your online marketing site. WordPress is an inexpensive way to increase your web traffic, which can lead to more sales and higher profits.

Using Stumble Upon To Increase Blog Traffic

wordpress blogging

Alexa and Blog Traffic using Stumble Upon

Stumble Upon provides a service where like minded internet surfers can vote for a website that then becomes part of a Stumble Upon rotation.

Alexa provides a service where internet users can see the amount of traffic the site they are visiting is receiving. Normally if the Alexa traffic rank is high then the visitor might have more faith that the site being popular knows what it is talking about.

Alexa high and low. High is towards 1 where as low is towards millions. High is what we want to achieve.

Blog traffic is the amount of visitors you receive to your blog on a daily basis. This is of course the Holy Grail of blogging. To get and maintain traffic.

Well why would you want more traffic to your Blog?

Let me explain why and the results you should expect to receive.

The Reason For Blog Traffic

You set up a blog either using a free platform or self hosting for your site.

Your motives for such a blog is either a daily journal that you enjoy writing and to share with visitors that you do not know, friends and or family. You want nothing more from your blog but to express yourself.

Personally, I enjoy these types of blogs as the posts are normally from the heart and down to earth. Often I find these types of blogs to be quite inspiring.

Other reasons to start a blog is simply to make money. This is achieved by monetising the site with Adsense, In Line Text ads, Links and Banner advertisements.

Now if your blog has a very high Alexa ranking, and I do not mean millions but in the top ten thousand, you will have webmasters requesting to advertise on your site, pay for a link on your site and/or request if you would write a review of their site and post the review on your blog. This type of review can return a one time payment, a lot of money into your Paypal account.

This type of income generation can return a lot of money each month. Imagine some webmaster paying you 0 to 0 a month just to have a link on your site!!

There is the old catch phrase that Traffic = Clicks = Money. This is true, a lot of traffic will have ctr, that is a click through rate, at least a certain percentage of visitors will click on one of your ads.

How do we achieve A LOT OF TRAFFIC. Easy …. read on.

Alexa Traffic Toolbar

Alexa use a system to count the visitors to your site. This is generally known as the Alexa Toolbar. The Link is in the Resources Box to left.

When you install the toolbar there is an icon at the bottom of your browser that displays the traffic rank of the sites traffic. Very useful if your marketing and looking to exchange or pay for links. I use it as a gauge of how well the site is received and the credibility of the site.

So if Alexa uses the toolbar to record visitors to a site, how can we go around this so that Alexa will record visitors who do not use a toolbar?

The answer to this is to place a Alexa traffic widget on your site. The Link for the widget is also in the Resource Box.

Now, when a visitor lands on your site, the site Alexa traffic display widget will record the visitor. That is, every visitor to your site will be recorded by Alexa and count towards your traffic history.

Stumble Upon Resource Box

Free to join and to use. This is the link to join Stumble Upon.
Alexa Resource Box
Alexa Toolbar
Simply by using the Firefox and IE toolbars each member contributes valuable information about the web, how it is used, what is important and what is not.
Alexa Traffic Graph
Put an Alexa Traffic History Graph in your site. Traffic Graphs are dynamically updated daily.
Stumble Upon Traffic

Stumble Upon is an internet traffic goldmine. You will be told a lot of Stumble Upon traffic is useless as the visitors won’t click an advertisement or leave a comment.

Thats not our goal to use Stumble Upon traffic. We are using this traffic so we get a record of each visitor to our site that Alexa records and increases our traffic ranking.

The purpose is to gain a good Alexa traffic rank so that the site benefits from the other alternative ways the site can stand alone and make money on auto pilot. Remember a paid link per month, that is an automatic income!

To get the maximum benefit from Stumble Upon place a Stumble widget on your site (I’ll show you how) and build up relationships with other webmasters that you can invite to review your site and Stumble or thumbs up or down, your page.

As you become involved with Stumble Upon you can Add friends. Then using the Stumble Upon toolbar, send your pages to them and ask for a review. This is simply sharing each others work and performing a review that other Stumble Upon users can see and visit your site.

How It’s Done

First we download the Alexa toolbar and install this on the browser of choice and do not worry, no spam emails or anything else of that nature. Just a handy tool to have.

Next we install the Alexa Traffic Rank widget on our site. This will record visitors for us that do not use the toolbar.

Now here’s the trick I use. You know I always have a trick. You can see it in action here, my blog, New Hair Styles for Women. Notice at the top right of Sidebar 2 that in plan clear view is my Stumble Upon widget. In this position any visitor to my site can click this and write a review of my site.

Yes I know that in the Stumble Upon toolbar there is a Thumbs Up Down the visitor can use, but this widget allows a review to be written. The more reviews on your site and thumbs, will increase exponentially the Stumble Upon traffic to your site.

Installing this widget is easy. On your blog place text or html allowed widget in position at the top. Here is the code you use in the box to generate the widget.

Before I show you this though, here’s another trick. In the code you will see the url to be Stumbled. The trick here is to change this url to any other page of your site to share your Stumbles around.

The code can be found on Stumble Upon to place a widget on your blog. It does work as I have had this widget on my wordpress blog and the statistics of wordpress does record other clicks and this widget ranks very highly.

Putting It All Together

The purpose of this article is for one reason. To use Stumble Upon traffic to increase your Alexa traffic ranking.

The benefit is to record visitors to our site that increase our Alexa ranking so we can further monetise the site and attract paying webmasters and advertisers.

The goal is not to increase our Adsense earnings as this is proven to be unsuccessful using Stumble Upon traffic.

There are many affiliate programs that allow bloggers to install banner and link advertising to their site. The higher the Alexa traffic ranking the higher and more popular your site is, will command a higher rate of return, more money per click through or link display.

All the resources here a free and there is no or any ongoing cost to you. The way to make it work is to actively participate in Stumbling other sites and making friends.

I use the avatar of terratite on Stumble Upon and you are welcome to friend me. My friends actively send their new pages through the Stumble Upon toolbar and we do review each others sites.

Does it work, yes it does. The Alexa graph you observed higher up on this page shows my Alexa traffic a short time ago. The site is not three months old and already has a high Alexa traffic rank.

You can search your sites Alexa traffic rank at Alexa dot com.

I have enjoyed writing this article. I hope you too found it interesting and maybe something that may help you in the promotion of your blog sites.

How to Optimize Your WordPress Blog for the Search Engines

wordpress blogging

Article by William A Yutzy

Using your WordPress blog with utmost proficiency is not complicated if you just adhere to the directions. Some of the bloggers and webmasters tend to make it complicated or at least have the assumptions that it’s not easy. But, if you are thinking of minor alterations that will make for bigger success overall, WordPress SEO should be very simple. In this piece we will be examining three different WordPress SEO suggestions that may aid in making your blog more appealing to the search engines, as well as your readers…

Use Your Keyword In Title: If you only remember one thing about optimizing your WordPress is to always put the keyword in the title. This is one of the easiest and the strongest ways to get noticed by the search engines. However, you should never make keyword stuffing a part of your overall strategy. Only place your first keyword in the title if you think it makes sense to do so. Your title has to look good and flow well too. Link to Valuable Content: Don’t be afraid of pointing your readers toward resources that will actually help them out. If you link to other websites or blogs you prove to your readers that you are confident in your own abilities to create content they’ll want to come back for and that you’re not afraid of sending them to someone else for a little while. Search engines analyze websites and give more credit to sites that link to other authoritative resources. You need to make sure that your WordPress site or blog is as useful as humanly possible so that both the search engine spiders and the actual people who read it are impressed.

Place Permalinks: The urls of your WordPress blog has a lot of info that the search engines need to analyze your webpage. These urls possess the keyword phrases that you hope to receive high rankings for. You want to be certain that the urls in your WordPress blog are in the proper format so that the search engines have enough information to get your site ranked. This is so that it doesn’t contain a long string of numbers and digits. Also, all of the keywords that you want the search engine to see and rank you for should be arranged logically. You can have your URLs changed to permalinks by changing the settings in your WordPress control panel. This will immediately make changes to the pages of your WordPress blog.

It is fairly simple to use SEO with your WordPress blog if you changes things here and there. There’s simply a lot that you can achieve out of your WordPress site by focusing on the SEO factors and getting them right. Search engine traffic is crucial. You should not leave this step out of your strategy of getting your site ranked because this is a free way of getting traffic. So once you make the necessary changes and get the foundation right, you’ll find that your rankings in the search engines improve. At this point, you can use your WordPress blog to your advantage.

Marketing With Blogs Using WordPress Matters!

Marketing With Blogs

The beauty of web 2.0 is that you can interact with your customers and prospects. It was not like that in the world of web 1.0. Back then, sites where basically informational. You read the content, at that was pretty much all you could do.

The blog is really the original social network. This is a place where people come and share their thoughts with you and other readers. You create the content and this creates a multi-point conversation.

Whether a comment is positive or negative, you gain valuable insight into what it is customers like or dislike. This provides some powerful market research for you and gives you an opportunity to publicly address customer comments as well.

The search engines love WordPress. Why? As you create new content, you are constantly giving them more information to serve up. This means your posts can show up high in the search results, brand you as an expert in your field and drive more traffic back to your site.

Because your WordPress blog is social, it also compliments your presence on all the other social sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn. You can also take videos that you add to your YouTube channel and embed them into your blog posts.

When you create a new piece of content, you can share it with your friends and followers on all these other networks. This is what drives traffic back to your blog.

This is your house on the web and this is where you’re the host of the party. Unlike other social sites, you have complete control over all the content on your blog.

Once you start inviting people to come over to your house on the web by sharing your content with them, you’ll build a tribe of people that leave comments, subscribe to your RSS (real simple syndication) feed and opt-in to your e-mail list as well.

Building out your e-mail list is one of the greatest benefits of marketing with blogs. This enables you to follow-up with prospects on your terms and simultaneously deepens your relationship with them. You are able to keep your brand in front of them by sharing new content or informing or reminding them of the products and/or services you have to offer.

What’s also great about WordPress is that you can build your entire site using this platform, which makes adding a blogging component a piece of cake. You can also use your WordPress blog as a standalone site or integrate it into an existing website by linking it into the sites navigation.

However you decide to use WordPress, the blogging feature gives you a powerful tool to share content, attract an audience and create a dialogue between you, your customers and your prospects.

Customize Your WordPress Blog

wordpress blogging

WordPress is really taking the Web by storm. This is because it is so easy to set up a blog in WordPress and gives you tremendous flexibility. But simply setting up a WordPress blog on your site and leaving the template set to the default will not separate your blog from others. There are literally millions of WordPress blogs being set up everyday. What you need to do is customize your WordPress Blog.

The single-most important customization that you can do to your blog is the look and feel. To change the look and feel of a WordPress blog, one need only switch the theme. There are many themes that can be found on the Web and many are free. When you first explore different themes on the web you feel elated knowing that your site is going to stand out above the rest. You install the new theme on your blog and voila! Instant uniqueness. But then over time you see two, three.

maybe ten or more sites that are all using the same theme. Yikes! Your blog is no longer standing out (at least from a look-and-feel perspective).

Another problem when you customize your WordPress blog with themes that are commonly available is that it is a time consuming process to find the one(s) you want. Many people will start their search at WordPress.net. There are many themes available for free. But if you’ve ever tried to use WordPress’s search with some kind of niche keyword, e.g., Stock Market, etc., you will find that the search is not very helpful at all. The themes are very generic and not very keyword specific. Suddenly, your ability to customize your WordPress blog becomes hampered.

What is needed is the ability to quickly create your own template that not only makes your blog stand out and look great but is quick easy to create.

Sounds like a pipe dream, doesn’t it? It’s not and I am going to let you in on a big secret that I found that can help you do just that . You;ll not only have the ability to create a truly unique theme but you’ll be able to customize it any way you feel you want. You can add your own backgrounds, photos, artwork, etc. The sky is the limit.

Not sure what kind of theme you want to go with? This secret package will randomly create a theme for you. Then when you find the theme that looks good, you can customize your WordPress Blog by changing the various options available to you. What options can you change? You can change the colors, the background, the fonts, the styles, the headers and footers, and the menus. You can structure your whole theme around WordPress or choose Drupal and Joomla if you so choose. You can even structure the site to work as generic HTML.

So what is this secret product that can magically transform your blog (or site) into a unique, fun, and fantastic looking design in a matter of seconds? In my resource box, I have given you a link where you can find this incredible product. The creators give you the ability to download a trial version so why on earth would you not even give it a try? You know have no excuse whatsoever to not customize your WordPress blog.

Blog vs Static Website

wordpress blogging

Blog vs Static Website is there a difference between a blog and a Web site? Yes and no.

There are two types of sites.  Blogs and static websites.  Blogs are organized by dates and categorized by recent post/content displays.  A static site, the content is organized by content and not by date or categories.

To develop a static HTML website from scratch.  You will need to use a software like Dreamweaver or FrontPage.  Others use Notepad.  Notepad is all you need if you have the know how to write HTML code.

Blogs on the other hand is designed to handle easy content updates.  I use a WordPress blog.  It has built in functionality to easily update, share and archive content in your site.  Blog post show up on post page.  Clicking on the headline of a post will take you to a permalink page that only displays that one specific post and comment.  Add a category and tags to your post.  Now your readers have the ability to find anything you have written.

Blogs have the ability to post pages as the homepage, but you can create a static page for your homepage.  This is very simple to change.  All you do is go to general page in your dashboard and click on your radio button to the static page you created.

WordPress plugins.  Their are thousands of different plugins made by developers that can be used freely.  There are plugins like SEO pack, Google page rank, xml sitemap, super captcha plugin and many more.

If you regularly add content to your blog daily.  It will be indexed more frequently by search engines like Google.

Clone a WordPress Blog – How This Will Help Boost Your Time Value

wordpress blogging

However, on the side, I am also an affiliate marketer, and this is really where this sneaky little trick comes in handy.

As an affiliate marketer, having things ready to go within a very short time frame is essential to managing your time value. And one of the lengthy tasks that I (used to) undertake is the installation of a WordPress blog when it comes time to create a new affiliate site. The only problem here is that I like to keep my finger on the pulse, and work on the developmental side of things, so in essence, creating a WordPress blog takes me away from that.

So, lets look into it. How long does it take to install a WordPress blog? If you have fantastic installed, it takes 3 minutes to install, plus an additional 30 to 45 minutes to set up the plugins, and install the theme that you would like to use. If you are a successful affiliate marketer, this could be money down the drain, and as it happens, I reduce this down into a simple 10 minute task that I can easily outsource. Let me guide you through this.

Some time ago, I installed WordPress for another site that I run, and a handful of plugins. Now, to get to the gist of this all, and give you a better understanding, I will give you the nuts and bolts of a WordPress installation, and what it consists of. It consists of two things. A set of files installed in the domain directory, and a mySQL database. Both of these can be backed up and exported within a matter of minutes. So, at this point, I had the perfect WordPress installation, and I simply uploaded all of the themes that I own to that installation, and backed up two things. The domain directory, and the SQL database.

]]>

Well, first of all, as an affiliate marketer, I live day to day on an “as it happens” basis. If I come up with a good idea, I want it to be live by the end of the day, with as little pondering around as possible. By using the above method to clone a WordPress blog, I have managed to reduce the time it takes to get a blog up and running by anywhere up to an hour or more. It is as simple as that.

To finish off, I will mention what I refer to as “time value”. This is the calculation of the time that we work divided by the total cash flow that we receive from this work. Keeping your finger on the pulse is the most essential part of being a business owner, and at the same time, minimising the work that you do away from the developmental stages of your business. By taking the steps above to clone a WordPress blog, you are only reducing the time it takes to do one task,. Don’t get me wrong, there are millions of other tasks out there that will take up your time, and in the hope that I can help you get more ale from your time, this should help you understand that there are ways to boost your own efficiency, or even your outsourcers.
